Technology Ideas for next year

Next year I would like to have students to create videos of important ideas in units that we cover in science through out the year. I would like students to be able to plan them out using the story board sheets used in the wiki. Ideally, I would like to create a library of videos on my website that students could use for reviewing for tests or to watch if they were absent. Some videos I would like the students to create could be:

Comparing Plant and Animal Cells
Functions of Organelles in a cell
Human Body Systems; (Nervous, Skeletal, Muscular, Immune, Integumentary, Digestive, Urinary, Respiration, Endocrine.)
Photosynthesis
Cellular respiration
Parts of a microscope
Proper focusing of a slide
Using a dichotomous key
Creating a dichotomous key
Setting up a Punnett Square
Determining probability of offspring by using a Punnett Square
Steps of Mitosis
Different types of DNA mutations
How to interpret Sedimentary rock layers
The difference between symmetry and asymmetry
Creating and setting up line and bar graphs
Food webs compared to food chains
Ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
Organization of life from cell to biosphere

I’m sure there are some more out there Ill think of

draft video

there are already a few things I have to change. Thank goodness for revisions

Second video outline

Comparison of Photosynthesis and Celluar Respiration
My video is going to be a review of the connection between these two life sustaining processes.
The video is going to show that these chemical equations use and produce the same chemicals.
The video will show that these equations are essentially the same but are just opposites of each other. These similar but opposite equations will show the interconnectedness of plant and animal life.

Tools Used:
Digital Camera
White Board
Expo Markers
Audacity for Audio
Windows Movie Maker for Video Producion

Revised Video

Here is my revised video. Hope you like it. I want to have my students watch it for a review of blood types or to watch it if they were absent.

Video 2 materials

My video is going to be about the four different blood groups or blood types.
I am going to use:

IPhone camera, whiteboard with expo markers,
Blood cell models from wards scientific, Audacity for Audio, Windows Movie Maker for Video production.

Comments on Three Next Vista Videos

Science: Understanding the Periodic Table

This video was informative but it had no audio. It was very informative reviewing the organization and layout of the periodic table but I had to go back and watch it a second time because I miss read something. I liked how the Periodic Table changed color to highlight different periods and groups.

History: U.S. Forefathers

I liked this video but the title was not descriptive enough. It should have been stated that it was about the pilgrim monument and the meaning behind its design. I liked this video because it acted as a virtual field trip. There was statement at the end about how a shell monument showed the value of history but I needed a little more of an explanation.

Technology: Gaming in the Classroom

It was really short it has taken me to longer to comment on it than it did to watch it.
It was based on a few points: Be careful of underling messages in games and make sure it is age appropriate. It was just a talking head. But as I said before was short and concise but maybe too concise.

Outline for Student Video Blood Types

Introducing Blood Types. (for the Science section of Light Bulbs)

1) Title with Blood Red Background or Blood running down screen (horror scream in background)
2)Show Chart of ABO Blood Groups one at a time or all together
3) use footage of me modeling the the ABO Blood groups
4) use footage to show why O is Universal Donor and why AB is Universal Reciever because of presence of antibodies or no antigens
5) finish with credits and happy blood cell picture from blood donation poster

RSS feeds

I finally just read about what rss feeds are in learning and leading in technology magazine. They are like news headlines that you can subscribe to or post to your website. Cool. I'm going to try to get it on my efolio page.

Learning and leading article about blogging

There us an interesting article about a teacher who visited Vietnam and used a blog to communicate to her 9-10 year old students. An interesting point the author made was that she started to ask students questions. It makes me think of possible posting homework on a blog so students could post there responses. I think of might work if you could make responses private. What do you think???

Design 2

After our discussion the week before last on design I am almost overwhelmed at how much you can see, hear, feel, touch, and I would guess also taste design that is all around us. The question that has stayed in my head since our last discussion that Dr. Schneiderman asked us was, Do you always need to see design? My answer is NO! Composing music is designed along with the textures of paper, and the tastes of food. For example, if you think of the flavor combinations of ice cream isn't that a form of design by mixing. Design is all around us but we just often over look it or just ate it.

Design 2: Do you always need to see Design?

After our discussion last Wednesday I am almost overwhelmed at how much you can see, hear, feel, touch, and I would guess also taste design that is all around us.
The question that really got me thinking was when Dr. Schneiderman asked our group: Do you always need to see design? My answer is NO!! Composing music is designed. Textures of objects have a feel to them that can distinguish one from another and are designed. I am assuming that the tastes of foods are designed. If you think of flavor combinations like ice cream they are mixed or “designed”. Pink’s ideas presented about design is all around us and touches our lives everyday.

Design

Over the break I was thinking about design and a few things have come to mind. I have had force my self to look at other objects that are non electronic in nature. There is a lot of good design that can be seen in nature whether it be body plan of a creature plant or animal. A well designed object has to be easy to operate with a simple way to operate it. Thinking back to some of the electronic things I have purchased I don't really want to read the directions but to get the best use out of it you have to however I don't think you should have to if it is well designed.

iPhone...again

A few people have recently asked me if they should get one of these things. YES!!!!! Of you have the resources to spend the extra 30 bucks a month in adddition to what you normally pay. ...do it!!

I have paid for relatively few applications (the programs that go on the phone). But the ones I find useful for our class are:

The email function
Blog writer light (I am actually sitting on my couch writing this now)
Delicious app. All the sites you need from your regular account are accessable here
Calendar. Great!! We all have a lot of stuff going on for class work our personal lives it's great to have it all in one spot. Just set the alarms so you don't forget events
Amazon is good for getting books and tech stuff
eBay always interesting
BY times headlines and stories. Always good to keep caught up

I talked about it for months and got it as a gift at Christmas. I wish I did it sooner

So I figured out how to slice up our home page drawing with Faye and Seans help. I feel like I'm making some progress after it has felt like we were just spinning our wheels.

Not being "connected" for a week

So last week being away in the carribean I did not have any of the Internet access or technology I usually use on a regular basis. To my surprise after about a day or two I didn't miss it at all. Thinking back to the recent past I really did miss the connectivity I have in my house when the Internet went down. What does this really mean? I don't really know. I guess you just become accustomed to what you have. After visiting some of the islands we are real lucky.

Screencast for adobe

I want to learn how to make a screencast. It would be really useful today for my students using laptops so I don't have to explain a hundred times where they can find links on our school server. But I would need them to have headphones but most i would say have ear buds from their iPods

IPhone

So over the break I got an I phone for christmas....Thanks Katie your awesome!!!
When we have have been talking about design this thing takes the cake. I was so anti apple products but this thing is cool. Over the break someone said if aliens landed on earth and was asked to show them how far we have come over time he said he would just hand over his I phone. It is awesome that you can have everything you need...or what I need at lease in one package. Phone camera internet email, useful applications music and yes a source of amusement the games. Since my computer has been in the shop this piece of technology has replaced it.
